JOHN'S EIGHT BEASTS
You have arrived in the presentation section. For a more in-depth discussion of these subjects please click here.

Continuing within this traditional continuous-historic context we find that while the Lord revealed 4 kingdoms to Daniel, for him to reveal to Nebuchadnezzar, over 500 years later the Lord revealed 8 successive kings/beasts to John, detailed in the 17th chapter of Revelation.

In order to understand the book of Revelation, it is important to note the assignment of the author:

Revelation 1:19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

The "thou" is John, so we should consider the context by looking through John's eyes, and the times in which John was writing.

Revelation 17:10  And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, [and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

There is a broad consensus in regard to the first 6 of John's 8 kings/beasts being Egypt and Assyria, followed by Daniel and John's Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and the Roman Empire.

Standing in John's place in time we can see that the  5th of the five "fallen" kings would be Greece, making the 6th king that "is" the Roman Empire - that was in power when he was writing.

The historical record shows that the Roman Empire was in turn conquered by the Islamic First Jihad as the 7th beast that had "not yet come".

Revelation 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

The eighth beast "was" - before John - but "is not".  So the 8th beast isn't about the Roman Empire either, but it is "of the seven".  This would indicate that it could be the sum of the prior seven, or has something in common with one or more of the prior seven, and/or it could mean it is of the seventh.

"….. the Beast that was and is not, being wounded to death with a sword, he is the eighth, and of the seven: he was therefore a collateral part of the seventh." - Isaac Newton

In Revelation 13:1 we learned of the leopard-bear-lion beast:  And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

John has shown us these seven heads may be seven kingdoms, and that the eighth beast/kingdom is "of the seven".  The Islamic First Jihad and the Islamic Second Jihad as the seventh "head" - the Islamic empire.  It would then make perfect sense when we read:

Revelation 13:3  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.

The deadly wound inflicted on the Islamic "head" was the Battle of Tours, France, which marked the peak of, and death knell of, the Islamic First Jihad.  Then transfer of Western wealth through development of oil resources and then purchase, as well as arms shipment, healed the wound of this Islamic beast, financing the Islamic Second Jihad in the image of the First Jihad.  All of John's "world" wondered after the beast in the First Jihad that almost conquered the whole known world, and even the whole literal world unto today.

John's 8 successive kingdom "beasts" are:
(There is broad consensus regarding the first 6 of John's 8 kingdom beasts.)

Egypt

Assyria

Babylon - lion

Medo-Persia - bear

Greece - leopard

Greece was the last of the 5 fallen kings before John.

Revelation 17:10  And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is,
The Roman Empire - is the 6th king.  John's "is" king of his day.

[and] the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.

Islamic First Jihad - 7th king/ beast - Conquered the Roman Empire as John's king that had "not yet come".  The Islamic First Jihad gained power for 152 years to it's peak, then was mortally wounded in the Battle of Tours, France, in 732 AD.

Western wealth transfer, in part through oil development and purchase, and arms transfer, healed this beast. "...and his deadly wound was healed..."

Revelation 17:11  And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

The eighth beast, the last in this succession of kingdoms, was "of the seven", and perhaps of the seventh,
Islamic Second Jihad - in the image of the First Jihad.

The Holy Land was physically and spiritually desolated by Islam through the exile of Christians and Jews.

In "A History of the Jews", Paul Johnson wrote on page 321:  "Between 1827 and 1839, largely through British efforts, the population of Jerusalem rose from 550 to 5,500 and in all Palestine it topped 10,000 - the real beginning of the Jewish return to the Promised Land. In 1838 Palmerston appointed the first western vice-consul in Jerusalem, W.T. Young, and told him 'to afford protection to the Jews generally'."

Notes:

The Islamic Empire lost it's power after the First Jihad was mortally wounded in the Battle of Tours, with the two horned beast later "exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him", or in the presence of, the Islamic beast.  The Islamic Empire lost it's former strength, but maintained it's seat.  The transfer of Western wealth through oil purchase eventually healed the Islamic beast, financing the Second Jihad in the image of the First Jihad.

We can learn a little more about these earthly kingdoms:
Matthew 4:8  Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;  9  And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Brothers and sisters, as the called out, we are in the kingdom of Jesus Christ, and no longer a part of Satan's earthly kingdoms.

Revelation 1:9  I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Ironically, these earthly kingdoms of Satan are exactly what Islam desires to conquer, to rule the whole world under Islamic Sharia law.
